European regulation driving fleet management installation |
LONDON — The installed base of electronic transport fleet management units in Europe will top 1 million in 2008, according to market forecaster Berg Insight AB (Gothenburg, Sweden).
Regulations related to road transport activities are driving the market and the introduction of digital tachographs in the European Union from May 2006 has added reporting duties to truck fleet owners. Currently, tachograph data about driving times must be collected from vehicles using physical media. From 2008 a new standard will allow data to be downloaded automatically using any management system installed on the vehicle.
Even though the overall penetration level is just a few percent, some segments such as road transport will attain adoption rates above 30 percent. "The main challenge for the industry is now to come up with solutions tailored for specific customer needs and implementing those in a timely manner," said Tobias Ryberg, a senior analyst with Berg Insight, in a statement.
